Art & Beauty Magazine, Numbers 1, 2 & 3, Drawings by R. Crumb
Gathering all three volumes of R. Crumb’s Art & Beauty Magazine, this book guides the reader through the 20-year history of Crumb’s magazine, from the earliest images in the 1990s to the most recent drawings completed in 2016.
The first issue by Kitchen Sink Press in 1996, was a satirical take on aesthetics and Crumb’s exploration of subversion of sexuality and mainstream culture. Drawings of a diverse range of women in different poses are accompanied by quotes from famous artists of the past. The second volume was published in 2003, exploring further the same themes, including more re-imagination of the history of art & the representation of the female form. The third volume was done in conjunction with a show at David Zwirner in London and included in this book.
R. Crumb was born in Philadelphia in 1943 and uses the medium of comics as a way to address the absurdity of social conventions, fantasies, fetishes, politics & stereotypes.
