"Factory" an exquisite corpse by Eric Knisley & Jan Martijn Burger

This collaborative accordion book "Factory" by Eric Knisley and Jan Martijn Burger employs a classic surreal technique: the "exquisite corpse." With this approach, neither artist ever actually sees what the other has drawn, aside from a small strip of imagery which is folded over. Each artist must improvise his drawing from the basis of the little bit he can see of the other artist's work, while staying within the confines of the theme of the book. The books are bound by hand, with each copy being slightly different. The books are printed on 10" x 11 foot sheets, folded to fit in a normal book format. The paper, ink, binding tapes, glues and boards are all archival in quality, and the paper was carefully chosen to be folded and unfolded thousands of times. The books can be displayed "as is" or partly unfolded as a coffee table item.

Eric Knisley was born in 1961, started drawing shortly thereafter and has been unable to stop. He has designed and drawn scores of record and CD covers, tee shirt designs, comic books, magazine illustrations, photographs and more. Two of his "exquisite corpse" collaborative books are housed in the Library of Congress. He's an occasional musician and voice-over guy. In parallel, Eric has designed/implemented many interactive applications, 2D and 3D animations, UI designs, content for large-scale immersive digital environments, panoramic photographs, Virtual Reality applications, augmented reality content, scientific visualization, and much more. He is based in Raleigh, NC.

Jan Burger is an activist, puppeteer and cartoonist. He builds things out of paper and cloth and directs them to move. In 1999 he co-founded his company Paperhand Puppet Intervention in Saxapahaw, NC. They perform annual pageants, parades and demonstrations. In 2010 he returned to his love of comics attending the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont. He hopes his art will help people and the living things of the earth survive the coming of humanity.
