Histories of Dance

Histories of Dance is the research project and curatorial axis of the Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) in 2020.
This volume gathers 250 works of art that depict dancing and its attendant cultures. These are artworks that would have been included in an exhibit had the museum not closed during the pandemic. While closed, they focused instead on this text & research project reflecting a series of lectures and workshops. Sub-divided into seven sections accompanies by critical texts: improvisation, duets, gravity, tension and resistance, training and composition, rhythms and synchronicities and against the wall. Artists include Adrian Piper, Alexander Calder, Ana Mendieta, Edgar Degas, Faith Ringgold, Hélio Oiticica, Toulouse-Lautrec, Hieronymus Bosch, Keith Haring, Leonardo da Vinci, Luchita Hurtado, Lygia Pape, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Poussin, Kandinsky and more.
