The Future Generation, zine-book by China Martens
The Future Generation, The Zine-Book for Subculture Parents, Kids, Friends & Others by China Martens
China Martens started a zine called The Future Generation in 1990. She was a young anarchist punk mother who didn't feel there was enough support for young mothers like herself, so she began publishing articles on 'radical parenting' in zine form, in a time before the internet. The result is not so radical, but more honest than other parenting guides out there even today. Autobiographical, it covers topics of discipline, fathers, sex &violence, self-expression, anarchist child raising, life at home, sexism, work life & more. She published the zine for sixteen years, so the topics of child-rearing spans from baby to teenage. This tenth anniversary edition anthology includes an afterword by China's grown daughter Clover.
Even if you don't identify with any particular extreme of sub-culture, but feel at odds with child-rearing literature of today, this book is good to read. Especially in today's social media world where the reality of raising a child is kind of hidden behind pretty photos, it's a good reminder to read something like this. China takes on an honest, calm and sensible approach.
