We will take part in Fullsteam Brewery's first Night Market on Friday, July 13 from 9pm to midnight in Durham. It will take place in their newly revamped alleyway with an 'international' theme with food trucks and local craft vendors. Other participating vendors include: Exotique : Boutique and Art Gallery, Poonam Henna Art, GumCha - The original, handloomed 100% cotton scarf, Bryce Batts - Noonday, Style & Storytelling, Yumchi Kimchi, MacfieKatBeads & Ben Scanlan Spices.
Dog-Ear Bookmark Magazine, Issue 09- FREE
We received the newest issue of Dog-Ear, a "community interest" bookmark magazine published in the UK. We are lucky to be able to give this issue for free with web orders and purchases at Lump Gallery. The bookmark includes poetry, illustration & even a crossword puzzle. Contributors include Olivia Spidel, Charlie Methven, John Ros, Neil Laurenson, Mansour Chow, Vicki Johnson, Rebecca Field, Nathan Fidler & cover art by Tomoko Tsukiuda. In this issue, they even give The Concern Newsstand a shoutout as one of their few state-side stockists. Dog-Ear relies on donations, as in this issue from people like author Margaret Atwood (!).

Contempo, a leftist leaning literary newspaper from Chapel Hill, 1931-1934
The rare book collection at Wilson Library at UNC-Chapel Hill has most, if not all issues of Contempo, a literary newspaper that was published in Chapel Hill from 1931-1934. The beautifully designed, and provocative newspaper was founded and published by Milton A. Abernathy and Anthony Buttitta in their dorm room at UNC, along with fellow students Shirley Carter, Phil Liskin and Vincent Garoffolo. The "little magazine" was a literary and social commentary newspaper that included book reviews, poetry, community news, and articles on social issues like injustice, racism, censorship, sex and morality. It leaned toward anarchism, socialism & communism in its tone. The short-lived newspaper included articles and poetry by some big names in writing at the time as well, like William Faulkner (even a whole issue by him), Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, D.H. Lawrence, Samuel Beckett, E.E. Cummings, T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, Upton Sinclair & more.
Interestingly too, the founders of the paper founded the Intimate Bookshop in their dorm room which subsequently moved to East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill and lived there for close to 60 years with a rich history all its own.

Saturday, May 19, 12-6pm: Last minute pop up at 433 W. Main Street, downtown Durham
As Moogfest takes place downtown Durham, we are doing a pop up newsstand in the alcove of 433 W. Main Street, Durham, in front of the Carrack's own pop up exhibition of artist, Maya Freelon.
We will be there on Saturday, May 19 from 12-6pm.
Ashley Lukashevsky Illustration
We were excited to see this illustration by LA based artist & illustrator Ashley Lukashevsky pop up in our Instagram feed recently. She was lucky enough to get our very last Lydia Moyer/ Tero Juuti newsprint poster giveaway. It's the ultimate when something you've had a hand in inspires artwork from others. Ashley does illustrations to "dismantle patriarchal nonsense and systemic racism," and is involved with The Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, "a revival of Martin Luther King’s movement to topple the linked systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, and environmental devastation."

We will be popping up at The Patchwork Spring Market on Sunday, April 15 from 12-5pm at the Durham Armory. Come see what's new!
The Durham Patchwork Market began in late 2014 to create a space for local vintage vendors and creatives to sell their goods to the community. Held monthly, the Patchwork Market has been a consistent event the first Saturday of each month indoors at Fullsteam Brewery. In effort to continue to grow and provide opportunities for the creative development in the Durham community, larger and more frequent markets are being added to the schedule. The monthly April, August, and December markets will now be held at the Durham Armory with over sixty vendors participating. All markets are held indoors at either Fullsteam Brewery or the Durham Armory and are free for the public to attend!
Current Art Book Fair, Richmond, March 31, 2018
Excited to be participating in the Current Art Book Fair in Richmond, VA on March 31, 2018. "CURRENT Books will showcase high-quality works by art book publishers, artists, writers, and artist collectives who produce print media including artists' books, monographs, and zines. CURRENT Books will highlight regional makers from Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, and North Carolina, and give them a platform to exhibit and sell their work."
Taking place at Studio Two Three at 3300 W. Clay Street, on March 31 from 12-8pm, with a preview brunch at 11am. We will also be a part of a panel talk on the topic of 'Publishing as Curation' on the evening of Friday, March 30 from 7-9pm moderated by Don Russell, the Executive Director of Provisions Library, a research center for arts and social change based out of George Mason University.
Reading & Book Signing with artist Jesse Hulcher & his novel 'Drive It Like You Stole It'
On Saturday, February 24 at 4pm at Lump Gallery, Los Angeles- based artist Jesse Hulcher will read from his novel Drive It Like You Stole It, and sign purchased copies, available at Lump and on our web store. It's a rare occasion to hear this incredibly funny book read aloud. The book tells the story of two friends and their escapades on the road. Written more as a conceptual art piece, the novel was written during National Novel Writing Month in 2009.
Make America... newsprint poster by Lydia Moyer & Tero Juuti
While supplies last, we are giving away this special, limited run- newsprint poster with every purchase made online or at our Lump Gallery location in Raleigh. It was the idea of Charlottesville, VA- based artist Lydia Moyer as a spin off of what she sees America should be, mocking Trump's 'Make America Great Again' slogan: "Make America An Endless Expanse of Old-Growth Forest With No Certain Borders Again." Moyer enlisted the help of Finnish designer Tero Juuti to recreate the MAGA hat typography -look into this newsprint poster. The result is, as someone pointed out to Moyer after the fact: "some irony in the whole project since newsprint is tied to deforestation." 22.75" x 27.5"

Opening the same night is an exhibit by Becky Flanders: PAIN BODIES: Political resistance and the accumulation of psychic pain
Becky Flanders is an artist and entrepreneur based in Tampa, FL. Born in the Washington DC area in 1980, she received her BS in Artificial Life and the Digital Arts from UMBC in 2002, and her MFA in Photography from USF in 2009. She is a leading member of the photography collective Fountain of Pythons, and a member of the all-female curatorial collective CUNSTHAUS. Her work has been exhibited from Miami to Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Japan, and Australia. Her works have recently been accepted into the permanent collection of the Kinsey Institute. Her focuses are the mythic feminine, transcendent and ecstatic states, sex positivity, and the relationship between subjects and states.

Guest Room Project Space is happy to present Thomas Dexter's Ham-Slicer Assemblage: An Extended Cinema Performance, in coordination with the opening of an exhibition titled APEL, a part of The Wrong Biennial.
Dexter’s performance acts as a preview of Cosmic Rays Film Festival, coming to the Varsity Theater in Chapel Hill on March 1-2, 2018.
Doors open at 5:00 pm to view APEL. Dexter's performance will start at 7:00 pm.
Thomas Dexter is an NYC-based artist working within the language of cinema. Dexter’s solo and collaborative projects have been exhibited, screened, and performed at venues internationally, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Microscope Gallery, Experimental Intermedia, PS1/MOMA, Roulette, The New York Museum of Art and Design, Sight and Sound Festival, Issue Project Room, the Mononoaware Festival, The Lesley Heller Workspace, The Invisible Dog, and in collaboration with ESP-TV among others.
APEL, also called "Super. New. Wireless. Magical. Perfect." is curated by Andy Berner and includes the artists: Alice Maitre (Pairs), Erin Mitchell (Berlin), Filipe Matos (Lisbon), Maya Ben David (Toronto), Mit Borras (Madrid), Olivier Hodasava (Paris), Punk is Dada (Berlin), Rachel Lamot (Madrid), Seth Kranzler (New York City), Shohei Fujimoto (Tokyo).

Lump Gallery pop up during First Friday, December 1
The Concern Newsstand will pop up next at Lump Gallery in Raleigh during First Friday on December 1 from 6-9pm.
The same night will be the opening on one side of the gallery for Bill Brown and his piece, Moving Pictures, part of the show entitled Analog Playhouse.
On the other side of the gallery will be a piece up by Jeff Bell, called Night, Day, Night for the last night.

The Concern Newsstand's next pop up will be at Art Basil 2017, hosted by Bowbarr in Carrboro, NC on Saturday, November 25 from 6pm on.

We are excited to have the world's largest bookmarks! They are perfect for magazines & large format books.
Thanks to the expertise of Tip Type in Wilkinsburg, PA we have them! Tip Type is an artist run print shop offering linotype, letterpress and stationery. Originally the space was founded as a typesetting shop in 1957. Tip Type revamped the space and some of the original machinery continuing business in the same original vein, including letterpress, hot metal composition, sales and production of artist proofs along with design services. Contact them to have something printed or visit them in their pie-slice shaped shop.
