Two Day Pop Up + Reading at Horse & Buggy Press' PS118 Gallery in Durham

We are excited to have a two-day pop up in Durham on Friday, June 3 & Saturday, June 4, 12-6pm at Horse & Buggy Press’ PS118 Gallery Space in Durham (118 West Parrish Street. Downtown Durham).

The Concern will have a broad selection for sale + sale items.

On Saturday, June 4, Ann Humphreys will read from her new, self-published book ‘The Tao of Hoop’. Ann is a writer, hula hooper & Carrboro resident. The book--which is a mixture of memoir, philosophy and spiritual inquiry, with a dash of self-help thrown in--guides the reader along the path Humphreys took as a middle-aged newbie hooper, showing how the hula-hoop taught her the crucial life lesson of how to feel. Not which emotions are appropriate to feel at any given moment, but rather, how to embrace the embodied experience of all emotions--especially those we do not wish to feel--and be transformed by that embrace.

The Concern reading library for 181 exhibit at Locust Projects

181, artist collective (Brandon Boan, Abby Donovan, Tom Hughes, Jason Rhodes) has an exhibit at Locust Projects in Miami, FL called THE ABSOLUTE VALUE OF INFINITY ON ITS SIDE (O DISSIPATION). The Concern Newsstand has been invited to curate a reading library display in conjunction with the exhibition. It can be viewed there from February 19- April 9, 2022.

The collective’s exhibition will activate a series of circumstantial compositions considering time-based obstruction, including: the ancient Mud Lake Canal, Reserve-Capacity wave maneuvers, attempts to spot the endangered snail kite, shadow-telling trails from Mabel Cody, and other anomalous successions.

As a collective the 181 is interested in composing situations that generate experiential spaces which expand, contract, or reassemble as information sloshes about. Imperfect approximations of the universe as a whole. Artists, a physicist/electronic engineer/musician, a mushroom forager/rockhound, and a former linotype operator—any attempts to formalize their practice they view with distress.

As far as they can tell, the 181 has been working together since 2007 when they found themselves gathered by the Pacific Ocean with a glim glam golden Q, roughly 10 yards of transparent lavender vinyl, and a broken hold on the sea’s reflection.

LUMP25 Fundraiser

www.indiegogo.com/projects/lump-25th-anniversary-fundraiser

The Lump experiment began in 1996 when artist, Bill Thelen, and engineer, Med Byrd transformed a lackluster cinderblock building that was formerly an upholstery shop, then a cobbler’s workshop, then a night club called, The Blue Lady Lounge, into a vibrant exhibition space that also offered affordable studios for artists. Over the past twenty-five years, Lump has served the region’s creative community by providing space and resources for innovative, thought-provoking art exhibitions and events, while acting as a pipeline between North Carolina and the greater world of contemporary art.

Lump continues to bring rigor and professionalism to the hard-driving experimentation and self-determination that defined its inception. Now, as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, LUMP relies almost entirely on your financial help in order to continue to serve artists and realize their ideas in the uncompromising spirit with which the space was created.

In celebration of Lump’s first 25 years, we’ve set a fundraising goal of $25,000 in order to cover all of the bases. Your much needed donation will be spread between exhibition programming, rent, and general maintenance of Lump’s two-gallery space. In return for your generous support, you’ll be able to claim a small piece of Lump in the form of various incentives, depending on your donation level. We have Lump T-shirts designed by Bill Thelen, exclusive limited-edition risograph prints by 5 artists created specifically for our 25 for 25 campaign. We also have risographs posters from past Lump shows, designed by Jerstin Crosby, plus copies of Blount Force Magazine, Lump’s annual art, and lit zine. And in lieu of a traditional art auction, we have original works of art created by a wide range of artists, working at every level, available at a variety of donation amounts. Throughout the fundraiser we will be adding items on a regular basis, so keep checking in. The goodies will keep coming.
